Disagreements are part of family life. When conflict becomes difficult to resolve on your own, mediation offers a structured, respectful way to talk through issues and reach your own agreements.

What is mediation?

Mediation is a voluntary process in which a neutral third person helps people communicate, identify the issues and explore options. The mediator does not take sides or make decisions; the people involved decide what works for them.

When mediation can help

  • Communication has broken down, but everyone is willing to talk
  • There are practical arrangements to agree on
  • People want to reduce cost, time and stress compared with going to court
  • Maintaining a respectful relationship matters, for example when parenting together

When it may not be suitable

Mediation may not be appropriate where there is family violence, a significant imbalance of power, or any safety concern. In those situations, speak with a lawyer or a support service first. In an emergency, call 911.

The goal is not to win an argument, but to find an arrangement everyone can live with.

How CCJ supports families

  • Conflict resolution education
  • Mediation services (with certified mediators only)
  • Family communication workshops
  • Referrals to counselling and legal professionals
